Dental Implants

About dental Implants

A dental implant is an artificial tooth root, typically made of titanium, that is placed into the jawbone to act as a replacement tooth (or teeth). It is an option if you have lost a tooth or have severe damage and want a solution that looks, feels, and functions comparably to a natural tooth.

Step-by-step process:

Evaluation and planning

  • Your dentist will take X-rays or 3D images to accurately assess your jawbone and decide if it is strong enough for an implant. They will also check for any health issues that have potential to affect healing.
  • Once this is complete, a plan will be curated based on your individual needs, such as how many implants are required and where they will be situated.

Tooth extraction (if necessary)

  • If a damaged tooth resides in the location where the implant is to be placed, it will be removed.

Implant placement

  • The implant, which looks like a small screw, is surgically inserted into your jawbone. This procedure is usually performed under local anaesthetic (you are awake, but the area is numb), however sedation options are available if you feel nervous.
  • Post placement, the implant needs time to fuse with the jawbone in a process called osseointegration. This process can take several months and is essential for the implant to remain securely in place.

Abutment placement

  • Once the implant has fused with the bone, a small connector; called an abutment; is attached to the implant. This part protrudes above the gum and serves as an attachment point for the restorative tooth.

Crown placement

  • A custom-made crown (the element that looks like a tooth) is attached to the abutment. The crown is specifically designed to match your other teeth in shape and colour, providing a natural look.

Follow-up and care

  • Regular check-ups are essential to ensure the implant is stable and healthy. With appropriate care and maintenance (brushing, flossing, and visits to your dentist), implants can last many years. As with any dental treatment, various factors can reduce the lifetime of dental implants, these include, but are not limited to, general oral health and lifestyle choices.

Key points:

Healing time: Because of osseointegration, the process can take several months.

Strength and longevity: If cared for correctly, implants are secure, stable, and can last for decades.

Cost: Implants tend to be more expensive upfront, however they act as a long-term solution.

The overall implant procedure takes both time and commitment, but the result is a durable, organic-looking replacement tooth.
