Dental Implants

About dental Implants

A dental implant is an artificial tooth root, typically made of titanium, that is placed into the jawbone to act as a replacement tooth (or teeth). It is an option if you have lost a tooth or have severe damage and want a solution that looks, feels, and functions comparably to a natural tooth.

Step-by-step process:

  Evaluation and planning
Your dentist will take X-rays or 3D scans to check your jawbone and make sure it’s strong enough for an implant. They’ll also look for any health issues that might affect healing. After this, they’ll create a personalised plan, including how many implants you need and where they will go.

Tooth extraction (if needed)
If there’s a damaged tooth where the implant will go, it will be gently removed first.

Implant placement
The implant, which looks like a small screw, is placed into your jawbone during a simple surgery. This is usually done under local anaesthetic, so you’ll be awake but won’t feel pain. The implant then needs a few months to fuse with the bone, which keeps it secure.

Abutment placement
After the implant has fused with your bone, a small connector called an abutment is attached. This sticks out above the gum and holds the new tooth.

Crown placement
A custom-made crown (the part that looks like a tooth) is fixed onto the abutment. It’s designed to match your other teeth in shape and colour for a natural look.

Follow-up and care
Regular check-ups help make sure your implant stays healthy and stable. With good care like brushing, flossing, and dental visits, implants can last many years. Your overall oral health and lifestyle can affect how long they last.

Key points:

Healing time: The implant needs a few months to heal and join with the bone.

Strength and lifespan: With good care, implants are strong, stable, and can last for many years.

Cost: Implants cost more at first but are a long-lasting solution.

The whole process takes time and effort, but you’ll end up with a natural-looking, durable new tooth.
